The Skate Pit Construction |
Well, its finally done. The Skate Pit is complete! Check out some photos of the process and stay tuned for the ‘making of’ Documentary video. |

(above) Initially there was a roasting pit, but Brent made short work of demolishing it using only his bare hands and a shovel. (right and right below) Next, 7 tons of volcanic rock were brought in and spread out to form the floor. We needed some flat ground and these rocks, we hope, will absorb the water that will come in the rainy season. (below) Tensions resulting from monotonous hard work in the sun were the cause of a few outbursts and disagreements between the workers. (bottom right) Fortunately the skate visionaries recognized that their work was of a higher calling and they put they’re differences aside. |

(above) Construction began in the garage and stayed there for about 3 weeks while we made 2x4’s from alfajilla. That’s right we made all our own 2x4’s from pine logs, and treated each one by sanding and applying water sealant. This was one of about a thousand screws that went into the project. (below) The ramp consists of four of these structures and an 8’x8’ base on top of which we laid plywood. If these quarter sections look heavy its because they are. Each weighs over a hundred pounds! (right) The circular saw is a powerful and handy tool to have around when your building a ramp. No accidents to report! |
(above) With the help of Don Juan, we were able to drag the pieces out to the pit and begin assembling them. The coping went up next. We knew this was an important step and we had to adjust it a few times to get it just right. |
(above) I think at some point early on we said we weren’t going to skate the ramp until it was completely done. Well, that kind of discipline is unnatural for natural skaters. Besides, we needed to test it, right? (right) Unfortunately for Caleb, while Brent was “testing” it, he had to finishing fastening the plywood. |

(above) None of this artwork would have been possible without the inspirational contributions of Will Ellis. You sure as heck can’t skate, but we love you, bro! |
